Monarch Butterflies & Caterpillars
I have an obsession with caterpillars. I absolutely love those creepy little crawlers. And the monarch butterfly caterpillar is one of the prettiest and most recognizable. However, they are becoming harder to find. This is because of pesticides and the loss of native plants. These insects need our help to survive. And anyone can help just by planting a pollinator garden.
How You Can Help Save the Monarch Butterfly
Monarchs require milkweed to survive. The female butterflies only lay their eggs on milkweed plants. The larvae, also known as the caterpillar, exclusively feed on the milkweed. Without it, they will die. Milkweed leaves also provide caterpillars with shelter.
How you can help the monarch butterfly:
Plant milkweed at your home or business.
Have a pollinator garden using local plants.
Avoid using pesticides. Pesticides kill the eggs, larvae and butterflies. Then birds and other animals consume the insects and in turn, they are poisoned.
Get involved in community monarch conservation projects
Try to work with your county, city and state authorities to save the milkweed. Milkweed grows naturally along many roadways and is often mowed down during peak season.
Educate others about monarch conservation efforts.

How to Tell the Difference Between Male and Female Monarchs
When the wings of the butterflies are open, it is easy to tell the difference between male and female butterflies. Males have a single black spot on each hind wing.
